Recently, I have felt the need to write more.
As my liberal arts education progresses, it is becoming markedly less liberal-artsy. Most of my General Education Requirements are now behind me and I am diving deeper into my major and minor ( I’m planning on taking 4 math classes and 1 computer science class next semester). As you can imagine, there aren’t too many essays to be written in math and CS, so I’ve been trying (and failing) to make myself write something…anything.
I had a moment of clarity today when I came across two quotes in a math textbook about writing. The first is from F. Scott Fitzgerald:
You don’t write because you want to say something; you write because you’ve got something to say.
And the second is from Scholem Asch:
Writing comes more easily if you have something to say.
With these nuggets of knowledge in mind I have decided to allow myself to simply exist and experience, and if something comes to me I will put it down. Perhaps I will write about Mathematics, perhaps coding, perhaps music, perhaps philosophy, perhaps a film I have recently seen. But at times when I have nothing, its no biggie.
There is enough noise for its own sake on the internet without my adding to it.
